Open Talk Club has always been one of the most popular classes at NESE. In this class, you will improve your ability to present yourself in both social and professional situations, as well as learn situationally appropriate ways to ask others for personal information. Through in-class conversations, you will also develop your pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Students report significant English improvement from this club.

There are many ways to improve your English. However, it is well established that using language that is relevant to the speaker helps linguistic memory as well as active production. There is nothing more relevant to you than telling your story - who you are - and how you became the person you are today. Likewise, learning how others also became themselves is not only beneficial to your comprehension and speaking but, of course, allows you to make friends from around the world.

As students at NESE, Harvard Square have noticed for years - and as you will also see - as you speak, your English, slowly but surely, begins to flow. You stop thinking about grammar rules and translating from your mother tongue as you tell your story, and respond and engage with those of others. Instead, your English, somewhat haltingly at first, starts to pick up speed - just like a train going faster and faster. The magic of this environment is that students become so engrossed in the subject matter that the rules of English become secondary - until they realize that they are actually and intuitively speaking the music of English - and it is “in-tune”.

Students say that Samuel and Open Talk Club have empowered them to speak English confidently, to communicate effectively, and to find motivation to achieve their goals.

Never be afraid to make a mistake. Your teacher is here to help you. If you try and are correct, that is to your credit. If you try and you make a mistake, that is an ideal opportunity for your teacher to help you, and for you (and the class) to learn something new. Trying is important; perfection 100% of the time is not. Remember, “Mistakes are not important; Understanding is”TM
